Alarming allegations of corruption and irregularities have surfaced at the Uttar Kafrul Central Jame Mosque and Jamia Islamia Madrasa in Dhaka’s Kafrul area.
According to local residents and worshippers, the institutions—both under the jurisdiction of the government-administered Waqf Estate—have been subject to unchecked financial and administrative misconduct.
Eyewitnesses report that the mosque and madrasa are being controlled by Aminul Islam Amin, brother of former Awami League leader Rafiqul Islam, with assistance from individuals including ex-Hafiz Farid Ahmed and a man known as Russell. Allegedly, these individuals are using threats, mob pressure, and manipulation of local sentiment to maintain control and misappropriate donated funds.
One particularly shocking incident occurred on June 20, when a letter alleging that the mosque’s water line was illegally diverted to Rafiqul Islam’s residence was read aloud before Jummah prayers. The letter also accused Farid Ahmed of embezzlement. As a result, the mosque’s current khatib, Mufti Maulana Mahbubur Rahman Bin Nuri, faced threats and was later barred from entering the mosque.
The khatib has since filed a general diary (GD) with Kafrul Police Station (GD No. 1404, dated 21/06/2025), citing threats to his life.
Despite being removed from his position as madrasa principal in August 2024 due to various allegations, Farid Ahmed reportedly continues to exert influence over both the mosque and madrasa, including financial and administrative decisions. Locals question his educational qualifications and allege that his salary far exceeds Waqf guidelines.
Investigations also revealed that Farid Ahmed has reportedly amassed significant personal wealth, including a large farmhouse in his village, allegedly funded by misappropriated donations. Locals further claim he has changed political affiliations to consolidate his control and is now backed by corrupt officials within the Waqf Administration, particularly Assistant Administrator Farid Ahmed (not to be confused with Hafiz Farid Ahmed).
Multiple complaints have been filed against both Farid Ahmed and Aminul Islam Amin, including a GD by Rafiqul Islam’s younger brother (GD No. 546, dated 08/10/2024). Police have described the matter as “highly sensitive” and confirmed an ongoing investigation.
Repeated attempts to contact the accused for their comments were met with denials. Farid Ahmed dismissed the allegations as false and politically motivated, while the Waqf official declined detailed comment.
As tension builds in the community, residents and worshippers express growing frustration and fear of a potential violent confrontation, calling on higher authorities to intervene and restore order and transparency at these important religious institutions.
