Police attacked in Moulvibazar extortion case; Two arrested

A case has been filed against several individuals, including Surman Mia, also known as Sumon Mia (40), and others for allegedly attacking police officers at Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station. The charges against them stem from an earlier extortion case in which they allegedly threatened employees of Hobiganj Agro Limited and demanded monthly bribes. The suspects are also accused of trying to have a previously filed theft case (FIR No. 2, GR No. 279, dated 03/09/2023) dropped by using threats.

According to the complaint filed by Zahidul Islam Sajeeb of Hobiganj Agro Limited, Surman Mia and his associates threatened and intimidated the company’s employees. They were allegedly extorting money from the company on a monthly basis. The complaint led to a case being registered at Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station (Case No. 6, GR No. 6, dated 06/01/2025, under sections 143/385/427/379/506/114 of the Penal Code, 1860).

On March 16, 2025, when police attempted to arrest Surman Mia, his associates attacked the officers. Three police officers were seriously injured in the assault, with one suffering two deep cuts to his leg. In response, the police arrested two individuals from the scene and have filed a separate police assault case (FIR No. 23, GR No. 79, dated 16/03/2025), with an ongoing investigation under sections 143/332/353/224/225/34 of the Penal Code, 1860.

One of the accused in the assault case is Khairul Islam, the President of the Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila of the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Federation. He, along with his associates, has allegedly been obstructing the company’s operations and spreading false information. The accused are reportedly still active in the area, participating in various events, including Iftar gatherings organized by different groups.

The company authorities have stated that they will take legal action against the spreading of rumors and false information. Additionally, they pointed out that the accused have several ongoing cases of document forgery, fraud, and other criminal activities in multiple police stations across Moulvibazar district.

Local police and administration are actively investigating the incident and have promised to take swift legal action against those involved.
