Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated that Dhaka has not yet received any official response from India regarding the deportation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He made this comment on Saturday while speaking to journalists after attending the annual general meeting organized by the Belabo Thana Association in Purbachal, Dhaka.
He said, “We have not yet received any official response from India on the matter of her (Sheikh Hasina) return.”
Earlier, on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a weekly briefing that India had received communication from Bangladesh regarding Sheikh Hasina’s deportation a week ago. However, he emphasised that no further information could be shared beyond this acknowledgment.
The Indian response came after a report by the national English daily ‘Hindustan Times’, which noted that Bangladesh had not followed proper legal procedures in making the deportation request. The report also mentioned several reasons, including the lack of an appropriate agreement, which made the request unfeasible. However, the Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson refrained from commenting further on the report.
Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a popular uprising on August 5, fled to India on the same day. Since then, she has remained in India, where she faces multiple charges including murder and genocide. To pursue legal proceedings, Bangladesh sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi on December 23, requesting her return.
