The government has agreed to fulfill all demands put forward by Jagannath University (JnU) students and teachers, including the approval of housing allowances, full budget allocation, campus expansion, and action against police involved in assaulting teachers.
The announcement came from University Grants Commission Chairman Prof SMA Faiz, shortly after demonstrators began a hunger strike at the Kakrail intersection in Dhaka on Friday afternoon to press their demands.
Prior to the official announcement, Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam wrote on his verified Facebook page that a detailed roadmap addressing the JnU issues—especially the student housing crisis—would be announced within hours.
The protest, organized under the banner of ‘Jobi Oikkya,’ has been ongoing for over 50 hours, with students and teachers staging demonstrations and demanding urgent action. The hunger strike was officially declared around 3:50 pm by Muhammad Monzur Morshed Bhuiyan, spokesperson of the JnU Teachers’ Association and a professor in the Finance Department.
Former students also joined the protest in solidarity, calling for permanent solutions to long-standing problems faced by the university.
Earlier, Mahatab Limon, general secretary of the JnU Journalists’ Association, announced the protest plans during a rally. The programme was supported by teachers and student leaders from various political and social groups on campus.
Although the government has accepted the demands, students have pledged to continue their sit-in at Kakrail until the commitments are implemented.
