The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for political party registration until June 22, allowing new parties additional time to fulfill the necessary requirements to participate in the upcoming 13th general elections.
“Until Thursday, seven parties had submitted their applications, while 20 others requested an extension. Considering the circumstances, we’ve decided to extend the registration deadline to June 22,” said EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
He emphasised that interested parties must submit their applications within the new timeframe and comply with all legal and procedural requirements.
The announcement followed a two-hour meeting earlier in the day between the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) and Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. During the meeting, NCP reportedly presented several demands, including a request for more time to complete their registration.
Prior to the extension, Thursday was the final day for submitting registration applications.
According to EC officials, the parties that have already applied for registration include the Bangladesh Conservative Party (BCP), Janata Congress Party, Bangladesh Probashi Kalyanmoy Party, Bangladesh Justice Party (BJP), Bangladesh Trinamool Janata Party, Bangladesh Mukti Oikya Dal, Bangladesh Janashakti Party, Bangladesh Jatiya Bhumihin Party (BMLP), Bangladesh Republic Party, and Bangladesh Jana Jote Party (BJP).
