
Bogura District Bidi Workers Union demanded withdrawal of duty on bidi products in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.
The union members formed a human chain and held an encirclement programme in front of the Customs, Excise, and VAT office in Bogura on Thursday.
They made a five-point demand including the withdrawal of advance income tax in the next budget.
The demands included withdrawal of duty on bidi, withdrawal of advance income tax, stopping foreign bidi companies’ low-level cigarettes, increasing wages of workers employed in bidi industry and stopping sale of fake bidis.
After holding the human chain, the workers presented a memorandum with the five-point demand to the Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) through the Assistant Commissioner of Bogura Customs, Excise, and VAT office.
Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation President Amin Uddin, Vice President Nazim Uddin, Joint Secretary Abdul Gofur, and Organising Secretary Shamim Islam, among others, spoke on the occasion.
General Secretary Harik Hossain moderated the event.
