Attempted kidnapping of schoolboy in Moulvibazar, family living in fear

An attempted kidnapping of a schoolboy took place in Moulvibazar, but the child was saved due to the intervention of local residents. The family is now living in fear for their safety. A written complaint has been lodged with the Moulvibazar Sadar Model Police Station regarding the incident.

According to the victim’s family and witnesses, a group from Sylhet attempted to abduct 14-year-old Tanvir Aziz on the evening of Saturday, February 22. Tanvir was lured out of his home in the East Sultanpur area of Moulvibazar city and was being taken in a car when local residents noticed the situation. They immediately intervened and detained the kidnappers while informing the police. The incident occurred near the Islam Mission and Wali Kutir areas.

Tanvir’s mother, Khaleda Begum, mentioned in her complaint that her husband works abroad, and she lives in a rented house with her two children. On the day of the incident, she had gone to the pharmacy to buy medicine and left her son Tanvir and her niece Sumaiya Soniya at home. When she returned, she found that Tanvir was missing. Upon asking her niece, she was told that several people had come and taken Tanvir downstairs.

She immediately called Tanvir, and he answered the phone, screaming and saying, “Mom, they are taking me away.” When she asked where he was, he replied, “Near Orbit.” She rushed to the location and found her son terrified, crying, and surrounded by a crowd. His pants were dirtied, and his shirt was torn. Tanvir explained that the abductors had tricked him into going to his uncle’s shop and then forcibly tried to get him into a white Noha vehicle (Dhaka Metro- Ch- 51-9530), pressing his mouth shut to prevent him from shouting. However, local people heard his screams and rescued him, detaining the kidnappers and their vehicle until the police arrived.

Tanvir’s family is now mentally disturbed and living in constant fear. Due to the threats from the accused, Tanvir’s mother has stopped sending her children to school. The accused individuals are powerful and devious, and the family fears they may face further attacks or harassment.

Tanvir Aziz stated, “They told me they were taking me to my uncle’s shop, but then they tried to force me into the car. They dragged me into the seat and pressed my mouth to stop me from speaking. I screamed, and the local people came and saved me.”

Eyewitness Muktadir Mia shared, “I was closing my grill workshop when I heard a boy screaming near a white car. I recognised it was Tanvir, and he asked for help, saying they were trying to take him away. We quickly rushed over, rescued him, and detained the kidnappers until the police arrived.”

Another eyewitness, Mohammad Zahir Mia, owner of Orbit Training Institute, said, “I suddenly heard screams and saw a group of people trying to drag Tanvir into the car. If we hadn’t been there, the boy might have been in serious danger. Thank God he was saved.”

When contacted, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) said he wasn’t fully aware of the incident and advised consulting the investigating officer for further details.

investigating Police officer Shamsul Islam mentioned that no formal case or FIR has been filed for the attempted kidnapping, stating that the dispute between the victim’s family and another party is related to money, specifically involving sending people abroad.
