Yunus calls BNP, Jamaat for back-to-back talks amid political unrest

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has invited key opposition parties for urgent meetings on Saturday evening in a bid to defuse rising political tensions.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been invited to a meeting at 8:00pm at the State Guesthouse Jamuna, though the party has yet to confirm its attendance. BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed told reporters on Friday that the party had received the invitation but would decide later on whether to participate.

Earlier on the same day, the Chief Adviser’s Office verbally approved a separate request from Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman for a meeting with Yunus at 7:00pm at the same venue.
Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said the meeting was requested to address the country’s “rapidly deteriorating political scenario.”

The back-to-back engagements underscore fresh efforts by the caretaker government to reach out to major political stakeholders as pressure mounts for an inclusive framework ahead of the next national election.
