
A workshop titled “Leather Industry Crisis: Role of Media” was held in Dhaka under the SIBE-NIMC project, spearheaded by the National Media Institute (NIMC) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The event, inaugurated by Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry, brought together key stakeholders including media representatives, researchers, and industry professionals.
The workshop, led by Mohammad Abu Sadique, Deputy Project Director of NIMC, aimed to discuss the ongoing crisis in the leather industry and the role of media in addressing these challenges. Experts such as Dr Md Abdul Muttalib, Professor at the University of Dhaka’s Institute of Leather Engineering, and Md Abul Kashem Azad, Principal Scientific Officer at the Leather Research Institute, provided insights into the technical, policy, and economic aspects of the crisis.
The discussions emphasized the need for innovative business models, including involving orphanages in leather collection, and the role of the media in promoting research-based reports and eco-friendly industry solutions. The chief guest, Mahbuba Farzana, underscored the importance of media in raising awareness and advocating for sustainable practices in the leather sector.
The event, chaired by Kausar Ahmed, Director General of NIMC, and moderated by Sumona Parvin, Deputy Director of NIMC, concluded with a call for investigative journalism and policy-driven reporting to aid the industry’s recovery and growth.
