BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to return to Bangladesh soon to lead what the party describes as the “final phase” of its movement to restore democracy, said BNP Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters outside the Gulshan residence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Dr Zahid said, “Zubaida Rahman arrived in Dhaka today. The day is not far off when our Acting Chairman will lead the democratic movement from his homeland instead of from London.”
Dr Zahid, who accompanied Khaleda Zia on her return from London via a royal air ambulance, said the political atmosphere is gradually becoming more conducive for Tarique Rahman’s return. “In a few days, we hope the right conditions will emerge for his homecoming — and when that happens, he will surely return,” Zahid stated.
Zubaida Rahman, Tarique’s wife, is expected to stay in Dhaka briefly before heading back to London to reunite with their daughter. However, Zahid confirmed that she will later return permanently alongside Tarique to participate in the party’s political efforts.
“Tarique Rahman’s return will mark the beginning of the final stage of our struggle for democracy in Bangladesh,” he said.
He further reported that Khaleda Zia is in stable condition following her long journey. “She is a bit physically exhausted but mentally strong and composed,” he noted.
Dr Zahid expressed the BNP’s gratitude to the Emir of Qatar and the Qatari government for generously providing the royal air ambulance that facilitated Khaleda Zia’s medical travel to and from London. He confirmed that the service was provided free of charge and equipped with full medical facilities.
Asked about Khaleda’s future political role, Zahid said, “She will continue to lead the nation in this critical time. Under her guidance and with Tarique Rahman’s leadership, the people of Bangladesh will reclaim democracy, justice, and their fundamental rights.”
He urged the nation to pray for Khaleda Zia’s continued recovery and good health.
Zahid also extended appreciation to the Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), other law enforcement agencies, and media professionals for their coordination and support during Khaleda’s arrival and safe transfer from the airport to her home in Gulshan.
“She has conveyed her heartfelt thanks to all those who stood by her — from party leaders and activists to ordinary citizens — for the overwhelming love and welcome she received,” he added.
The BNP leadership views Tarique Rahman’s return as a pivotal moment in its ongoing political campaign, one it hopes will ignite mass mobilisation for a democratic transition.
