Tarique Rahman demands national election by December to end political crisis

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has strongly asserted that the next general election must be held by December 2025, emphasizing that timely polls are essential to resolving the country’s ongoing political crisis.

Speaking virtually at a massive youth rally in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday afternoon, Tarique said, “We want the national election to be held as soon as possible, and it must take place by December of this year.”

He expressed concern that deliberate attempts are being made to delay the election, alleging that certain individuals both within and outside the interim government might be working under a hidden agenda in the name of reforms.

“It seems the election process is being trapped in the web of so-called ‘minimum’ and ‘maximum’ reforms. People are beginning to see through this façade,” he added.
The rally was jointly organized by Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), drawing tens of thousands of youth from Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Faridpur divisions.

The event also marked the observance of the martyrdom month of BNP founder and late President Ziaur Rahman.
Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna presided over the rally, which featured speeches from top BNP leaders including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed. Leaders of the Swechchhasebak Dal and JCD, SM Jilani and Rakibul Islam Rakib, also addressed the gathering.
The BNP reiterated its demand for an inclusive and credible election, warning that any further delay would deepen the political uncertainty.
