Tarique Rahman acquitted in all cases, free to return to Bangladesh

A Dhaka court has acquitted BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, and six others in a bribery case linked to an attempt to secure immunity in a murder investigation.

Judge Md Abu Taher of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-3 delivered the verdict on Thursday morning, as confirmed by the defense lawyers, Borhan Uddin and Aminul Gani Titu.

Following the ruling, BNP’s legal representatives announced that there are no pending cases against Tarique Rahman or Babar in the trial courts.

The case was originally filed in 2007 at Ramna Police Station, accusing the defendants of offering bribes totaling Tk21 crore in exchange for removing Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir’s name from the murder case of Humayun Kabir Sabbir, a director at Bashundhara Group.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed the charge sheet on April 24, 2008, and the court framed charges against the accused on July 14, 2008.

BNP lawyer Borhan Uddin stated that the ACC had failed to present sufficient evidence against the accused. As a result, with no remaining legal cases, Tarique Rahman is free to return to Bangladesh and resume his political activities.
