Sri Lanka seized control of the second Test against Bangladesh after a commanding batting display on Day 2 in Colombo. Pathum Nissanka led the charge with a brilliant unbeaten 146, while Dinesh Chandimal narrowly missed out on a century, scoring 93, as the hosts closed the day on 290-2, leading by 43 runs.
Resuming on 220-1, Sri Lanka built on a solid platform laid by Nissanka and Lahiru Udara, who earlier contributed a fluent 40 in an 88-run opening stand.
Udara was trapped lbw by Taijul Islam after a successful review, giving Bangladesh their only wicket before tea. However, that breakthrough failed to slow Sri Lanka’s momentum.
Nissanka, who struck a century in the first Test, continued his excellent form, reaching his second hundred of the series off 167 balls, hitting 16 boundaries. This knock also marked his first home Test century.
Chandimal partnered him in a 194-run stand for the second wicket, blending aggression with patience. The former skipper reached his 34th Test fifty, but fell on 93, top-edging a reverse sweep off Nayeem Hasan after facing 153 balls and hitting 10 fours and a six.
Bangladesh’s bowlers struggled throughout the day. Pacers Ebadot Hossain and Nahid Rana leaked runs in the morning, with Rana conceding 17 off just 2 overs and Ebadot 17 from his opening 3 overs.
Spinners Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz later helped tighten the scoring rate, but wickets remained hard to come by.
At stumps, Sri Lanka stood at 290-2, with Nissanka unbeaten on 146 and Prabath Jayasuriya on 5. The hosts are well-placed to build a big lead and push for a series-clinching win.
Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh were dismissed for 247 in their first innings, adding just 27 runs to their overnight total. Taijul Islam top-scored with 33, while Sri Lankan seamers Sonal Dinusha and Asitha Fernando each claimed three wickets to wrap up the innings quickly.
