The National Citizen Party (NCP) has called on the interim government to deliver a concrete and comprehensive roadmap focusing on elections, political reforms, and transitional justice during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Speaking to reporters on Friday night (24 May) following the meeting at the State Guest House, Jamuna, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said, “We requested the Chief Adviser to fulfill the mandate he undertook when assuming office. Our main focus was on three interconnected priorities — reforms, justice, and elections — and we urged him to lay out a structured and time-bound roadmap to address them.”
He also expressed concern over the slow progress in rehabilitating the families of those killed during the July Uprising, stressing the need for immediate acceleration of this process. In a bold demand, the NCP delegation urged the government to legally declare all elections conducted during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure void, calling for an overhaul of the electoral legitimacy framework.
Additionally, the NCP pressed for local government elections to be held ahead of the upcoming national polls to ensure broader democratic participation and accountability. Nahid Islam noted that the delegation received a positive signal from the Chief Adviser, who said that the much-anticipated July Charter — a proposed framework for reforms — could be introduced within July.
The NCP delegation comprised six members, including Convener Nahid Islam, Chief Organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adib, and Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Jara. The meeting began at 9:30pm, following their arrival at the venue at 8:28pm.
The NCP meeting followed earlier discussions the same evening with two other key opposition forces. At 7:30pm, a four-member delegation from the BNP, led by Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and including Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, met with the Chief Adviser to discuss electoral reforms and the ongoing political crisis.
Shortly after, at 8:00pm, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher held a separate meeting where national elections topped their agenda.
The back-to-back discussions signal an intensified effort by the interim administration to engage with diverse political actors and stakeholders to chart a path toward free and fair elections in a politically volatile climate.
