In a bid to meet the country’s growing energy needs, the government has approved the import of one cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United Kingdom at a cost of Tk 621.84 crore. The procurement will be made from the spot market through an international quotation process.
The approval came during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), held on Tuesday at the Cabinet Division in Dhaka. The meeting was chaired by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to official sources, the committee granted anticipatory approval for the country’s 30th LNG cargo, expected to arrive between July 15 and 16, 2025, under the provisions of the Public Procurement Rules, 2008.
Petrobangla, the state-run oil, gas, and mineral corporation, invited bids from 23 companies with existing Master Sales and Purchase Agreements (MSPAs). Of these, three companies submitted proposals, all of which were deemed technically and financially responsive.
After a thorough evaluation by the Proposal Evaluation Committee (PEC), the contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd., UK. The purchase will be made at a unit price of $15.17 per MMBtu, with a total quantity of 3.36 million MMBtu to be delivered.
In a separate decision, the CCGP also approved the cancellation of a tender related to infrastructure rehabilitation. The tender, under Package No. WP-14, was part of a project aimed at the emergency restoration of roads, bridges, and culverts in Sunamganj and Habiganj districts, which were severely damaged by the 2022 floods.
