The government will take strict action against illegal hoarding of essential goods during Ramadan, according to Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
Dr Ahmed shared this information after a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Purchases at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday. He emphasised that even if food supplies are available, sometimes they are hoarded in warehouses or hidden instead of reaching consumers. He stressed that this will not be tolerated during Ramadan, and the government will ensure that such issues do not occur.
District administrators have been instructed to closely monitor local markets to prevent manipulation at both wholesale and retail levels.
The Finance Adviser also mentioned that the meeting addressed multiple issues, including the import of rice and fertilisers, construction of fertiliser warehouses, and infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and ports. He clarified that the approved projects are necessary ones, not mega-projects, including bridges and roads.
Regarding the current food situation, Dr Ahmed said that although prices of some goods may fluctuate, the overall food situation is stable, with food prices decreasing according to statistics. As Ramadan approaches, he assured increased market monitoring and the establishment of special sales centers to ensure easy access to essential goods for the public.
On the Matarbari project, the Finance Adviser confirmed that most of the work is complete. The project, which includes power generation and port facilities, is funded by a favorable Japanese loan that is later converted into a grant. He mentioned that the integrated nature of the project will enhance both power and port facilities.
