The government has launched a major project to support farmers in flood-affected regions of eastern Bangladesh, focusing on restoring agricultural livelihoods, repairing irrigation systems, and enhancing disaster resilience. The Ministry of Agriculture submitted a proposal titled “Rehabilitation of Agricultural Livelihoods in 2024 Flood-Affected Areas” to the Planning Commission, which was reviewed on 5 February 2025 and returned for revisions.
The estimated budget for the project is Tk280.65 crore, with Tk36.65 crore from the government and Tk244 crore from loans. The project, set to run from April 2025 to June 2028, has been approved as part of the Annual Development Programme for the fiscal year 2024–25.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will oversee the implementation. The project aims to provide immediate relief, such as seed distribution, equipment, and agricultural training, while enhancing irrigation and disaster preparedness. The Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) emphasized the need for immediate benefits and suggested reducing administrative costs to maximize support for farmers.
Md Sayduzzaman, the chief of the Agriculture, Water Resources, and Rural Institutions Division, emphasized that the focus should be on activities directly benefiting farmers, with BADC focusing on improving irrigation and disaster adaptation to reduce future losses.
