Govt, IsDB sign $241.3m agreement for bridge project

The Government and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have signed a landmark financing agreement amounting to $241.30 million for the construction of five climate-resilient bridges in the Mymensingh Division of Bangladesh. The agreement was formalized on the sidelines of the IsDB Group Annual Meeting held in Algiers, Algeria.
The loan agreement was signed by Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance, on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh, and Dr Rami Ahmad, Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank, representing the IsDB.
Also present at the signing ceremony were Mohammad Hasan Arif, Alternate Governor of Bangladesh to the IsDB; Rashed Ahmed, Chargé d’Affaires of the Bangladesh Embassy in Algiers; and Dr Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser, Chairman of the Islamic Development Bank.
The “Construction of Five Climate Resilient Bridges in Mymensingh Division” project will be implemented by the Roads and Highways Department under the Road Transport and Highways Division of Bangladesh. The initiative aims to significantly enhance connectivity in remote regions along the Sunamganj–Jamalpur and Shyamganj–Durgapur border roads.
Designed to strengthen infrastructure resilience against the impacts of climate change, the project will facilitate improved transportation, road safety, and access to education and healthcare. It is also expected to stimulate local economies, create employment opportunities, and contribute to poverty reduction and social equity in marginalized communities.
The IsDB has been a longstanding development partner of Bangladesh, providing sustained support through project loans, grants, trade financing, private sector funding, and export credit guarantees. This latest initiative reinforces the shared commitment of both parties to fostering sustainable and inclusive development.
