BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has stated that holding the next general election before December is entirely feasible—if the government acts with sincerity and genuine intent.
“We believe a national election is possible before December, provided the government stays on the right course,” said Tarique while virtually addressing a programme in Dhaka on Thursday.
He urged the interim government to respect public expectations and promptly announce the election schedule, noting that despite being in power for nearly 10 months, the administration has yet to declare any specific timeline.
Tarique warned that the lack of a clear roadmap for elections has thrown the country’s political and economic future into uncertainty. “Political instability is growing, foreign investment is drying up, and hundreds of factories and mills are shutting down or nearing collapse,” he said.
He also criticized the government for not allowing trade bodies to voice their concerns or present challenges to relevant authorities, accusing the administration of being disconnected from the people.
“If the country is to be run solely through administrative files, then there’s no need for politics,” Tarique added, reiterating his call for a swift return to democratic processes through a timely and credible general election.
