First meeting of national consensus commission with political parties to discuss reform recommendations

The National Consensus Commission, led by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, will hold its inaugural meeting with political parties today, February 15, to review recommendations from six key reform commissions.

The meeting is scheduled to take place from 3pm to 5pm at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital. Prof Yunus, who chairs the commission, is expected to address the participants.

A delegation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will attend the meeting, confirmed BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan. Senior leaders of Islami Andolan Bangladesh have also confirmed their participation, according to a statement from the party.

Representatives from other political parties are anticipated to join the discussion as well.

The interim government established the seven-member National Consensus Commission to assess and adopt the recommendations of six reform commissions. The commission will engage with political parties on key issues related to political, constitutional, and electoral reforms in hopes of building a broad consensus.

The other members of the Consensus Commission include Prof Ali Riaz (Constitution Reform Commission), Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury (Public Administration Reform Commission), Safar Raj Hossain (Police Reform Commission), Badiul Alam Majumder (Electoral Reform Commission), Justice Emdadul Haque (Judiciary Reform Commission), and Dr Iftekharuzzaman (Anti-Corruption Reform Commission).

The Commission is tasked with completing its consensus-building process within six months, starting with today’s meeting. The Chief Adviser’s Office will provide secretarial services to the commission.
