BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday warned of what he called a looming threat to Bangladesh’s democratic future, alleging a deep-rooted conspiracy aimed at derailing the upcoming national election.
Speaking virtually from Thailand, where he recently underwent eye surgery, Fakhrul addressed a joint meeting of the BNP and its affiliated organisations held at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.
“In exchange for the blood and sacrifice of thousands of students and citizens, a new hope was born — a vision for a truly democratic and fascism-free Bangladesh. But now, a dark shadow has been cast over that hope,” he said.
Fakhrul alleged that deliberate efforts are being made to delay the national election and suppress the people’s right to vote. He accused elements within the government of plotting to mislead the nation and undermine its democratic trajectory.
“You must have noticed the return of divisive politics,” he said, expressing concern over growing attempts to fuel discord among various segments of society and between state institutions.
Calling for unity and vigilance, Fakhrul urged BNP leaders and activists to remain alert and resist any efforts to destabilize the democratic process. “It is now the BNP’s key responsibility to restore democracy, rebuild Bangladesh, and uphold the hopes and dreams of the people.”
He stressed that the party’s rank and file must play an active role in defending the country’s independence and sovereignty. “We must ensure that no one can destroy democracy or replace it with autocracy and fascism.”
The meeting saw participation from senior BNP leaders and representatives from the party’s various associate bodies.
