
A court in Brahmanbaria has sentenced three individuals to death for the 2019 murder of businessman Saidur Rahman in Bancharampur Upazila. The sentence was issued on Thursday by Brahmanbaria Additional District and Sessions Judge Ayesha Akter Sumi, according to prosecution lawyer Md Azad Mia.
The convicted individuals, identified as Kajal Mia (49), Ripon Mia (32), and Rasel Mia (30), were involved in the murder of Saidur Rahman, a fruit trader whose body was discovered in the Meghna River near the Upazila’s launch terminal on September 30, 2019. Saidur had been missing since the day before.
Ripon and Kajal, who were present at the court during the verdict, were each fined Tk 50,000. Rasel, who had been named as a suspect by Saidur’s brother-in-law, Lokman Mia, in the case filed on October 1, 2019, remains at large.
Investigations revealed Ripon and Kajal’s involvement, and both were arrested. In September 2020, police submitted a chargesheet, and both gave confessional testimonies in court. The defense lawyer, Mosharraf Hossain Sami, stated that the convicts would appeal the verdict in the High Court.
