
Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus has urged the relevant officials to reform Bangladesh’s existing labour laws to meet international standards, aiming to enhance the living conditions of millions of workers across various sectors.
The directive was given during a meeting with officials from the Labour and Employment Ministry on Wednesday, ahead of the 353rd session of the International Labour Organization (ILO) scheduled in Geneva from March 10 to 20.
Labour and Employment Ministry Adviser M. Sakhawat Hossain will head Bangladesh’s delegation to the ILO session.
“We must adopt a positive approach and ensure progress. We are not here to make excuses,” Prof. Yunus emphasized during the meeting.
He also called on the officials to provide insurance coverage and healthcare benefits to workers in the labour sector.
The meeting was attended by Labour and Employment Ministry Adviser M. Sakhawat Hossain, Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman, Law and Justice Division Secretary Sheikh Abu Taher, and ILO Country Representative Tuomo Poutiainen, among others. Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Geneva, Tareq Md. Ariful Islam, joined the meeting virtually.
