The Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the Bangladesh Police have jointly assured foreign investors of strengthened security measures, including direct access to a dedicated emergency contact line for immediate assistance during emergencies.
The announcement was made on Monday during a high-level meeting attended by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam and BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun. The meeting was held with representatives of six multinational companies whose facilities were targeted during protests earlier this month related to the Gaza conflict.
Executives from Nestle Bangladesh, Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages, Unilever Bangladesh, Bata Shoe Bangladesh, Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh, Pepsico, and Jubilant Food Works Bangladesh participated in the discussion.
The incidents of vandalism occurred across several cities on 7-8 April. IGP Baharul Alam stated that at least 140 individuals had been arrested in connection with nearly a dozen related cases.
BIDA Executive Chairman Harun described the meeting as not just symbolic but a firm indication of Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting its foreign investors during crises. “These companies are vital to the livelihoods of thousands and the country’s economic stability. While peaceful protest is a right, acts of violence against businesses that support our people must be condemned,” he said.
He also praised the police for their prompt response and firm stance against perpetrators of the violence.
IGP Baharul Alam reiterated law enforcement’s readiness to provide full protection to foreign enterprises. “Our goal is not only to respond to incidents but also to build lasting confidence and prevent future disruptions,” he stated.
