Bangladesh is seeking a diplomatic resolution to India’s recent restrictions on imports through land ports, including garments and other goods, rather than pursuing retaliatory measures, Commerce Secretary Md Mahbubur Rahman said on Tuesday.
“We will not take any retaliatory actions. They [India] have taken this step, but we will engage with them,” he told reporters after a meeting with secretaries from several ministries and leaders of the business community at the Secretariat.
The meeting was convened to discuss Bangladesh’s response to India’s move, which has disrupted the entry of several categories of Bangladeshi exports via land ports.
Rahman emphasised that Bangladesh is committed to de-escalating the situation and working toward a solution. “Today, we heard from our business leaders and stakeholders. We will now discuss the issue with our policymakers and relevant advisers. Our goal is to ensure the situation does not deteriorate further,” he said.
The commerce secretary underscored that such trade restrictions harm both countries’ business communities and called for constructive dialogue.
“We will tell them that this is not only damaging to Bangladeshi exporters but also to Indian importers. Let’s sit together and find a solution.”
He also revealed that Bangladesh has proposed a secretary-level meeting with Indian counterparts through an established bilateral forum to address the issue. “We sent a letter last week requesting a meeting. Once we receive a response, we will finalise the date,” Rahman added.
