
In response to a global call for a strike in support of Palestinian rights, Bangladesh has seen widespread protests. Educational institutions and students across the country have announced their solidarity with Gaza, following the ongoing violence in Palestine.
On Monday, Dhaka University (DU) and Jagannath University declared the suspension of all classes and exams. Jahangirnagar University also announced an academic halt on Tuesday. Rajshahi University (RU) plans to hold a rally at the Senate building to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
Various student organizations, including Chhatra Dal, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and Chhatra Union, have called for a nationwide closure of educational institutions and offices on Monday in support of the global “World Stops for Gaza” movement.
On Tuesday, Chhatra Dal will lead a campaign where students across the country will wear black masks and march through urban areas. A group of DU students, under the banner of “Azad Palestine,” has organized a major protest march toward the US embassy in Dhaka, scheduled for 3:30 PM on Tuesday, departing from the Raju Sculpture.
Earlier, several Dhaka University departments issued statements expressing support for the global strike, which aims to halt academic and professional activities to protest the violence in Palestine.
In solidarity with the global movement, Dhaka University has announced the suspension of all classes and exams on Monday, with offices remaining closed from 9 AM to 11 AM. A new schedule for the postponed exams will be announced later.
On Sunday, a group of DU students held a protest march under the “Azad Palestine” banner, demanding an end to the violence and advocating for an independent Palestine. They also conducted a funeral prayer in absentia.
The protesters urged the Bangladeshi government to take a firm stand on Israel’s actions and to reinstate the “except Israel” policy in passports. Musaddiq Ali, a student from the Bangla department, announced plans for a “flag march” to the US embassy on April 8 at 3:30 PM, starting from Raju Sculpture. He also called for funeral prayers in absentia to be held in mosques and further protests across the country.
