Actress Nusraat Faria granted bail

A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to popular actress Nusraat Faria, a day after she was sent to jail in connection with an attempted murder case tied to the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.

The bail order was issued by Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman following a formal hearing on her bail petition. Faria was represented in court by her lawyer, Barrister Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain, who confirmed the development to reporters.

Faria was detained by immigration police on Sunday at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to board a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight to Thailand.

She was subsequently handed over to Bhatara police and later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Police confirmed that she was arrested based on an outstanding warrant issued in an attempted murder case filed at Bhatara Police Station. The case is linked to a violent episode during the July 2024 uprising, which stemmed from nationwide student-led protests against discrimination and inequality.

According to the case statement, Enamul Haque, a bystander, was shot during a clash in the Bhatara area amid the protests. The complaint names 17 individuals, including Nusraat Faria, accusing them of aiding the suppression of the movement, including through alleged financial support.

Faria’s arrest sparked considerable attention on social media, with supporters expressing concern over the charges and the timing of her detention. While the legal process continues, her release on bail marks a temporary relief amid ongoing investigations.
