Police used tear gas and sound grenades to break up a procession organized by the banned group Hizb ut-Tahrir in Dhaka’s Baitul Mukarram area on Friday. Several members of the group were detained at the scene.
Despite a warning from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Hizb ut-Tahrir carried out the procession after Jummah prayers, chanting “Khilafah, Khilafah” from the south gate of Baitul Mukarram. The procession lasted for about 15 minutes before police intervened near Paltan by firing tear gas shells and sound grenades.
After regrouping, the group attempted to continue their rally, but police dispersed them once again. During this time, some supporters of the organization threw bricks and stones at law enforcement officers.
The protest caused significant traffic congestion in the Paltan-Baitul Mukarram area, leading to long tailbacks. Earlier in the day, the police headquarters issued a statement declaring all activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir to be criminal offenses. The statement reaffirmed the group’s banned status and stated that any of its actions, including rallies, meetings, or the distribution of materials, would be considered violations under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.
