Nahid to lead NCP set to be launched on Friday

The National Citizens’ Party (NCP), a new political party formed by leaders of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (SAD), is set to be launched this Friday in response to the country’s turbulent political landscape.

Nahid Islam, the recently resigned adviser of the interim government, will lead the NCP as its convener, while Akhter Hossain, a key coordinator of the SAD, will serve as the party’s member secretary.

Other key leaders include Sarjis Alam, who will take on the role of principal organizer for the northern region, and Hasnat Abdullah, a seasoned student leader, who will hold the same position for the southern region. Additionally, Nasir Uddin Patwary will be the principal coordinator, and Hannan Masud will serve as the joint coordinator of the party.

In a video message, Akhter Hossain confirmed that the NCP’s official launch will take place at a program scheduled for 3 pm on Friday at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka, and invited the public and media to attend.

The announcement follows a meeting held at the Jatiya Nagorik Committee’s central office in Bangla Motor earlier today.

Nahid Islam, who played a pivotal role in the student-led movement that led to the downfall of the Awami League government on August 5, resigned from his position in the interim government on Tuesday to join politics.

The launch of the NCP adds further energy to the country’s political scene, especially as student leaders previously announced plans to form a new party in time for the next general election, which is expected to take place at the end of 2025 or early 2026. In response, the major opposition party, BNP, has called on advisers involved in the new party’s formation to step down from their positions, declaring they would not accept any attempt to form a political party while in power.
