Gold trader shot, stabbed in Banasree

A gold trader was shot and stabbed by an unidentified group of armed men in front of his residence in the capital’s Banasree area on Sunday (23 February) night. 

“An armed group of 5-6 men wearing helmets and riding on motorcycles surrounded the man, stabbed and shot him in front of his home at around 10:45pm,” Assistant Commissioner of Khilgaon zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Faez Iqbal confirmed. 

The victim, Anwar Hossain, is the owner of Alankar Jewellers.

He was headed home after closing his shop located in the same area when he was shot at by a total of six rounds of bullets and one bullet hit him, police said. 

He was initially taken to nearby Farayzi Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, reports TBS. 

Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said a person from Banasree was brought to the hospital with bullet wounds and injuries from sharp weapons. “He is currently undergoing treatment.” 

After being taken to the hospital, Anwar Hossain told the police that he was heading home after closing his shop at night with two hundred bhoris of gold and Tk1 lakh. 

“At that time, about seven people on three motorcycles tried to snatch the bag I had with me. When I tried to stop them, they shot me. They took away the gold and money.”

Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ataur Rahman Akand told The media the armed men first tried to snatch his belongings, but when he retaliated,  a man wearing a red helmet shot him and another stabbed him and snatched away all his belongings.

“Upon hearing the loud bang [of gunshots] from the street, we peeked through the baranda. We then understood it was coming from indiscriminate shooting. Climbing down the building, I saw it was my father who was lying on the street. My father was stabbed and shot fired at six times. So many people were on the streets, no one came to rescue him. I was stuck inside the building for several minutes as the main gate was padlocked,” Farzana Akter, elder daughter of the victim told the media late at night after the incident. 

His wife Panna Akther told The media, “The tragedy here is that the main gate was shut. He was stuck out front when the assailants came and shot him nearly dead. Now he is fighting for his life in the Incentive Care Unit of DMCH.” 

Joint forces went to the spot at around 1am when locals began to crowd the area.
