Agriculture Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) has called for Japan’s assistance to help Bangladesh’s agriculture sector recover from significant losses caused by recent floods in the southern and southeastern regions of the country.
During a meeting with Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh IWAMA Kiminori at the Secretariat today, Chowdhury emphasized the urgent need for support, particularly for crops like Aman paddy that have been heavily damaged by the floods. “We need assistance from Japan, one of our key development partners, to overcome these losses,” he stated.
In response, Ambassador Kiminori assured Bangladesh of Japan’s commitment to aid the flood-affected areas through NGOs under the “Japan Platform,” noting that Japan has already contributed $2 million to support these efforts. He highlighted Japan’s experience in dealing with natural disasters and expressed readiness to provide further assistance.
Chowdhury, who also serves as the Home Adviser, assured the Japanese envoy of enhanced security for Japanese nationals and projects in Bangladesh, particularly in the country’s Export Processing Zones (EPZs). This came after Kiminori requested cooperation in ensuring the safety of Japanese citizens and investments.
The Home Adviser also discussed ongoing government initiatives to maintain law and order, including joint operations against illegal firearms and criminal activities. He acknowledged concerns about the situation in Myanmar, particularly regarding illegal drug production and smuggling into Bangladesh, and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring safety in Rohingya camps and surrounding areas in Cox’s Bazar.
“Myanmar must take back its nationals, and the Rohingyas must return to their country,” Chowdhury added, stressing the need for international cooperation to resolve the crisis.
