Death toll from south China road collapse rises to 36

Highway Collapse in Southern China’s Guangdong Province Claims 36 Lives as Rescue Efforts Persist

Following heavy rains, a section of road near Meizhou city leading to Dabu county collapsed early Wednesday morning, causing vehicles to plunge down a steep slope. The death toll from the incident has now risen to 36, with 30 people sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

Guangdong, known for its dense population and industrial activity, has faced a series of weather-related disasters in recent weeks, believed to be exacerbated by climate change.

The collapse, labeled a “natural geological disaster” by state media, trapped numerous vehicles and individuals. Rescue efforts involving around 500 personnel are ongoing, with authorities mobilizing specialized teams for search and rescue operations.

Last month, heavy rainfall in another part of the province led to floods, resulting in fatalities and mass evacuations. Additionally, a tornado in Guangzhou claimed five lives just last week.

With continued rainfall expected throughout May, authorities have warned of further potential disasters, particularly in southern and southeastern regions. China, while being a significant emitter of greenhouse gases, has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
