Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has announced that the Bangladesh Police is seeking the support of the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) to arrest its members who fled the country following the August 5 changeover.
“We have already initiated the process with INTERPOL’s assistance to bring back the police personnel who absconded after the events of August 5,” the IGP said at a press conference held on Monday at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Emphasizing fairness, he assured that no innocent individuals would be arrested, and all actions would be based strictly on thorough investigations.
In connection with the July-August mass upsurge, a total of 1,500 cases have been filed so far, and police have submitted charge sheets in two of them, according to IGP Alam. He directed all investigating officers to ensure transparent and impartial investigations, stressing that no one should be harassed or wrongfully implicated.
Addressing concerns over indiscriminate firing on protesting students during the mass movement, the IGP stated that the investigations would reveal who ordered the firing.
Highlighting the importance of depoliticizing the police force, IGP Alam called for operational activities to be handed over to a separate commission to eliminate political interference and ensure unbiased services to the public.
He also announced that Police Week will be observed from April 29 to May 1, with Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus agreeing to attend the event.
During the programme, the police force will review its activities over the past year and outline a framework to improve service delivery in the coming year, he added.
