Bangladesh on Tuesday paid $5 million to QatarEnergy LNG against outstanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) import bills, reducing the total dues from $37 million to $32 million, confirmed AKM Mizanur Rahman, Director (Finance) of Petrobangla.
The payment was made through Agrani Bank, with the remaining $32 million expected to be cleared tomorrow (23 April), said Rahman.
Bangladesh has paid $5 million outstanding LNG import bills to Qatar’s state-owned energy giant QatarEnergy LNG today (22 April) from the total due of $37 million.
According to Petrobangla officials, the remaining amount will be settled by the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), based in Jeddah. Bangladesh has a $500 million loan agreement with the ITFC to finance energy imports throughout this calendar year.
Thanks to the Finance Ministry’s consistent support in releasing foreign currency, Bangladesh has been able to reduce its long-term LNG payment backlog from $317.48 million to $67.62 million, he added.
“We’re committed to clearing all outstanding LNG import bills within this month,” Rahman said, expressing optimism over the country’s improving energy payment discipline.
