Court issues arrest warrants for Hasina, Rehana, Tulip, and Azmina in purbachal plot corruption case

A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and Rehana’s daughters Tulip Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq in connection with alleged corruption in the allocation of government plots in the capital’s Purbachal New Town project.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib accepted the charge sheets filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today, April 13. The court issued the warrants as the accused are currently considered absconding, according to court officials.

This move follows similar warrants issued on April 10 against 18 individuals, including Hasina and her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, in related cases.

The ACC launched an investigation on December 26, 2024, targeting Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and four of their children—Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Saima Wazed Putul, Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and Azmina Siddiq—over allegations of illegally acquiring six plots totaling 60 kathas in the Purbachal Diplomatic Zone with the help of high-level Rajuk officials.

ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain stated that the Sheikh family obtained these plots through abuse of power, irregular practices, and collusion with Rajuk officials. The plots were located on Road No. 203 in Sector 27 of the Purbachal project, with allocation letters issued in 2022 under high confidentiality.

Each 10-katha plot was priced at Tk30 lakh (Tk3 lakh per katha), with Sheikh Hasina reportedly receiving Plot No. 9.

The High Court had earlier appointed a three-member committee, led by former Justice Miftah Uddin Choudhury, to investigate the irregularities in the plot allocations. The committee was directed to submit its report within four months.

This case has stirred significant political and public attention, marking a major development in Bangladesh’s anti-corruption efforts.
