Bangladesh sets sights on top spot in global apparel exports: Korean EPZ founder at Investment Summit

Bangladesh, currently the second-largest apparel exporter globally among individual countries, is well-positioned to claim the number one spot with the right strategic moves, said Kiak Sung, founder of the Korean Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

Speaking as the keynote speaker at the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025 held today (10 April), Sung outlined a roadmap for Bangladesh’s apparel sector to rise to the top. He emphasized the need to embrace advanced technology, invest in workforce skill development, and build local manufacturing capacity for man-made fibers.

“To lead the global apparel market, Bangladesh must innovate and strengthen its infrastructure. Establishing its own production facilities for synthetic fibers is a crucial step forward,” Sung noted.

He also called for stronger policy support, particularly in expanding the number of bonded warehouses. “Improved access to raw materials through bonded warehouses will help manufacturers reduce lead times and boost export efficiency,” he added.

Touching on recent global trade developments, Sung welcomed the temporary suspension of the Trump-era tariff policy. “This three-month relief offers a breathing space, and the Bangladeshi government’s swift action deserves praise,” he said.

Looking ahead, Sung urged a shift toward value-added garment production. “To stay competitive, we must focus on high-value apparel. Relying solely on basic items will not sustain our growth in the long run,” he cautioned.
