Bangladesh has made a significant stride in space exploration by signing the Artemis Accords with NASA, becoming the 54th country to join the international initiative focused on peaceful, non-military space exploration.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday during the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025 at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka.
Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), highlighted the importance of the collaboration for the country’s youth, saying, “Our youth are dreamers, global, and eager to explore space. Through this agreement with NASA, we are taking the first step to make their dreams a reality.” Chowdhury said at a press conference following the signing.
A Long-Term Vision for Space Exploration
Chowdhury emphasized that the full benefits of the Artemis Accords would take 20 to 25 years to materialize. “This is just the first step of many. We are starting our journey with NASA, working alongside 53 other countries, and the future benefits will unfold as we progress,” he stated.
He also pointed out that this agreement could eventually enable Bangladesh to send its own astronauts into space within the next two decades.
Commitment to Responsible Space Exploration
The Artemis Accords, established by NASA in 2020, focus on responsible, sustainable, and transparent space exploration. Bangladesh’s participation signals its commitment to adhering to international rules for the peaceful use of outer space.
Defense Secretary Md Ashraf Uddin, who attended the signing ceremony, explained that the accords provide guidelines to ensure safe and sustainable exploration. “By joining this initiative, Bangladesh becomes part of a prestigious global alliance for space research,” he said.
Opportunities for Advancement and Collaboration
The partnership with NASA offers Bangladesh significant opportunities in space research and technology. It will accelerate the country’s space activities, particularly in developing its satellite program for disaster management, climate monitoring, and earth observation.
The agreement also opens educational opportunities for Bangladeshi students and researchers through NASA’s training programs, scholarships, and exchange initiatives, further promoting international collaboration in space science and technology.
A New Era for Bangladesh’s Space Program
By signing the Artemis Accords, Bangladesh is positioning itself for future space exploration and technological advancements. The country aims to inspire future generations, unlock the full potential of its youth, and establish itself as a key player in the global space community.
