Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), today urged all anti-fascist political forces to demand a ban on the Awami League’s (AL) political activities.
Speaking at a protest rally in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh, Dhaka, he also called on the authorities to cancel AL’s registration as a political party.
Hossain emphasized that the people of Bangladesh had previously defeated Awami League at great cost, with many lives lost on the streets, and vowed that they would never allow AL to regain power. He criticized AL for creating uncertainty whenever it held power, claiming that every time the party came into office, the people had to endure turmoil.
According to Hossain, the Awami League has undermined democracy, particularly through the establishment of fascism in the elections of 2014, 2018, and 2024. He stated that the people of Bangladesh fought for equality, human dignity, and social justice during the 1971 liberation war, only for AL to establish the BAKSAL regime instead of fostering democracy.
“The people of Bangladesh gave their lives on the streets and made their decision about Awami League. We swear by the blood of our martyrs that we will not allow Awami League to operate in Bangladesh as long as we have a single drop of blood left in our bodies. The politics of fascism and the ideology of Mujibism will not be allowed to thrive here,” Hossain declared.
He further accused the Awami League of committing multiple atrocities, including the Peelkhana massacre, the 2013 massacre, the Shapla Square massacre, the anti-Modi movement killings, and the recent 2024 massacre. He lamented that the party had never shown remorse for these crimes.
“If any force or individual in Bangladesh tries to support Awami League, the people, especially the students, will resist,” Hossain added.
Hossain called for not just the removal of AL leaders and activists but for the party itself to face legal action. He concluded by stating that there should be no place for the Awami League’s politics, ideology, or symbols in the future political landscape of Bangladesh.
The rally was also attended by NCP Chief Organizer (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adib, and other leaders.
